This is a fabulous wine for the money. This wine should be in your cellar. The 2007 Tenuta Monteti Caburnio with a score of 92 pts by the Wine Spectator and a price of $15.99 is an absolute no-brainer. You know which other wines from the same area of Tuscany got 92 pts in the same vintage, we are talking Tignanello, Guado al Tasso, Gaja’s Ca’ Marcanda. These wines sell for $80 to $100 a bottle. Tenuta Monteti is situated in the southern part of Maremma, the coastal part of Tuscany which includes Bolgheri that is famous for great Super Tuscans. The area has proven itself to make great Bordeaux varietals wine, rivaling the likes of Bordeaux and Napa. The world renown Carlo Ferrini is assisting with wine making. He makes some of the greatest red wine in Tuscany today including the likes of Casanova di Neri, Petrolo, La Massa and Oreno. Monteti’s philosophy is to combine the practical blend of tradition with the benefits of the latest technology. The results are spectacular! The wine is made as natural as possible and is a blend of 51% Cabernet; 28% Alicante and 20% Merlot. This wine would be loved by all who like big, rich full bodied red wine. This is truly another spectacular value we seldom see from such a prestigious location.<BR><BR><B>Tasting Notes:</B> Fresh and focused flavors of black cherry, black currant and herbs that border on jammy, but never cross the line. Supple and smooth, offering ripe tannins and bright acidity for structure, with excellent length. Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante and Merlot. Best from 2012 through 2024. 92 pts Spectator. Parker on 2006, not tasted 2007 yet: The 2006 Caburnio is a big, boisterous wine that captures the essence of this important Tuscan vintage. Blackberries, grilled herbs, spices, menthol and cassis are some of the nuances that come together in the glass with tons of Maremma character. This is a fabulous wine for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016.

A burst of dark red berries is followed by leather, licorice and spices. Bright red. Fresh notes of sassafras and orange peel complicate red cherry and strawberry aromas. Enters the mouth sweet and smooth, with syrupy red berry flavors complicated by intriguing nuances of peach and candied orange peel. Finishes satisfying, pure and long. Always one of the most enjoyable and well-made examples of Morellino di Scansano.

Bright, juicy and vinous, with serious intensity and lovely sweetness to its spicy, black fruit cocktail-like flavors; zippy acidity keeps it light and lively on the palate. Finishes with very good definition and verve, and lovely lingering perfume. Though this packs a noticeably high alcohol content, it manages to avoid coming off as blowsy or hot, and has above-average concentration for an entry-level wine.
