Love Napa Cab? We can't get enough of this American treasure. Especially where 2007 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, Wine Spectator's "Vintage Of The Decade," Robert Parker's Wine Advocate's highest rated vintage, is concerned. So when a seasoned winemaker like Honig's Kristin Belair is handed such awesome fruit to display her 28 years honing her skill in producing richly textured, subtle Cab with great depth and style, the wine is sure to be a treasure. And from right in our own backyard 2007 Honig Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley. This wine is a tapestry of complex red and black fruit characters with anise, clove and black pepper notes. Rich and graceful, with a full mid-palate and a lengthy finish, complemented by toasty oak and cocoa powder tannins. Family-owned, sustainably farmed, the Rutherford winery started as a 68-acre ranch in 1964 and only makes Cabernet Sauvignon on the red side. The hand-crafted Cab has signature Rutherford dust notes, an elegance and tremendous fruit that 92 points from Wine Spectator surely picked up on, coming as it does from the same side of the AVA as Caymus and Opus One. A top ten restaurant favorite in Wine & Spirits 2010 survey, this wine is also one of the great buys of this amazing vintage. Literally less than a handful of '07 Napa Cabs kept company with on its release with 92 points and a price of $40.While in stock, at this price, load up on this great wine from Napa's great ( greatest?, could be) vintage.

One of the great Napa Cabs from this incredible vintage. Parkers highest rated ever. Spectator vintage of the decade and 99 pts. We found Penche through the Wine Spectator Article New Faces Of Napa which focuses on the new top producers. In 1999, Scott and Pauline Asbill purchased a home with 4 acres of grapes in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. First the couple sold their grapes, but after meeting with winemaker Jay Buoncristiani in 2005, they decided to create their own label. They named it Penché, French for leaning or tilting, a reference to a 300-year-old oak tree that leans dramatically on the property. In this spectacular vintage we were very honored to be able to offer their tiny production Cabernet.

Tasting Notes:

Dark garnet hue; Deeply layered aromas of cassis, blueberry, chocolate, toasty French oak, sweet vanilla, cedar, floral perfume, rosemary, anise, and black pepper. Expect a big, full and rich mid palate density laced with intense flavors of ripe blackberries, black cherry, integrated toasty oak and mouth-coating chocolate. The persistent yet balanced finish exhibits excellent depth, purity and elegance. Winemarker, Jay Buoncristiani.
Robert parker: A brilliant effort, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits more blueberry, black raspberry, and floral notes intertwined with underbrush and foresty characteristics that suggest a cool climate Cabernet Sauvignon. With impressive finesse, concentration, and substance, it should provide immense pleasure over the next two decades. I enjoyed the combination of gracefulness plus power that these wines offer. They all reveal freshness, intensity, and beautiful purity.

Price $149.99 -- GRAPES Price $134.99 SAVE 10%
95 pts Parker
Tasting Notes: Tasted too late to make it into the December issue, Merus’s 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits an inky/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of blueberry liqueur intermixed with graphite, charcoal, cassis, and spice. The wood seems pushed to the background given the extraordinary concentration of fruit. Full-bodied, powerful, and rich with chocolaty espresso notes intermixed with blackberries and blueberries, this pure, impressively textured, long Cabernet should evolve for two decades.
