Masterful Maltus’s 2006 Chateau Pezat Deliver Right Bank Bordeaux Under $19 And A Savings Of 15%
St Emilion Grand Cru Teyssier’s Baby Brother At 36% Savings By The Case
Cult winemaker Jonathan Maltus labels himself a vigneron, literally a “vine grower.” An admitted obsessive about the effect of terroir on wines. St Emilion Grand Cru Chateau Teyssier, Maltus’ first Bordeaux acquisition, is the paradigm for his 2006 Chateau Pezat, whose vineyard is just down the road from St Emilion. The wine beats many a Bordeaux Grand Cru at triple the price. Why? Maltus increased density of planting and lowered yields. At Pezat he hand picks and double sorts it’s fruit for this 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc Right Bank Bordeaux blend. Vinfied by and at Chateau Teyssier. Rich, finely constructed with vibrant fruit this is hard core Bordeaux at a jaw dropping Grapes price of $18.99, and 15% off by the case When a master like Maltus puts his hand- crafted, focused skills to a Bordeaux, the result is a great value like 2006 Chateau Pezat. Maltus seeks out vineyards globally that will provide the very best grapes to produce high-level fine wine. The kernel of Pezat is a vineyard planted literally a pace outside of the Saint Emilion Appellation-towards the river from Chateau Teyssier near to Branne. Previously this large vineyard consisted of high trellised vines planted three meters apart-the norm in Entre-des-Mer where grapes are machine picked. Planting down the middle of the rows gave the same density as a vineyard in Saint Emilion. Vine heights were halved to those of St Emilion. The grapes are handpicked, double-sorted and vinified as the other wines of the Chateau - to the standard of a Saint Emilion Grand Cru. Vibrant fruit. This rich, medium-bodied, deeply coloured Merlot-based wine is moderately tannic, and clearly offers an extra dimension of quality at this price point. This wine is lively and fresh and should drink well over the next five years.
