Red Wine Hand-Picked
95 Pts Wine Spectator On a hillside in Montalcino lies CastelGiocondo, an ancient fortress built in 1100s to defend the road between Siena and the sea. The area is well-suited to the production ogf great red wines, particularly Brunello di Montalcino, which has been produced at CastelGiocondo since the late 18000s.The varying altitudes give CastelGiocondo a significant variety of soils, which can be characterized as four main types: galestro, clayey marls, conglomerates and sandy mixtures.
The 2004 harvest has been a very good one. The sunny days of the second half of September have been further favoring flavor and color concentration in grapes. Furthermore the deep thermal variations between day and night have given the wine complex and different aromas. Tannins contained in the grape stones have taken advantage of sun and mild temperature of this period and have allowed a slow and organic evolution of the grapes, which will result in high elegance of th wine.
Tasting Notes:Shows a complex nose of blackberry, tanned leather, sandalwood and cedar. Fascinating. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long, long finish. Concentrated yet balanced. Beautiful and complete. Best after 2011. 17,000 cases made

SILVIO NARDI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
sku # 2000049
Red Wine Hand-Picked
90 Pts Wine Spectator The principal vineyards of Tenute Silvio Nardi are located on the orginal estate of Casale of Bosco, a property of 2022 acres in the northwest part of Montalcino overlooking the Val d’Oria. The estate lies in a prevalently hilly area between the flood plain of the Ombrone River and the place name Cerralti. The podere of Oria, Sassi, Sant’Adele and San Michele, former sharecropped parcels of land, lie within the estatate. Casale del Bosco’s current 100 acres of vineyards, lying at an altitude between 790 and 1150 feet, are planted to Sangiovese Grosso and fall under the Brunello di Montalcino and the secondary Rosso di Montalcino denominations. There is also some potential for planting under the Chianti and IGT Toscana designations. Soils here are comprised of clay schists and jasper, a type of opaque, granular quartz.
The Manachiara estate, purchased in 1962, lies in the southeast corner of Montalcino near Castelnuovo dell’Abate and covers 505 Acers. The podere of Pinzala, Stercolati and Colombaio, as well a sthe vineyard of Manachiara proper, lie within this estate. The estate vineyards cover 95 acres and are situated at an altitude ranging from 919 to 1279 feet at varying exposures. The vines of th Manachiara vineyard, the oldest of the estate, are thought to be roughly 45 years of age and occupy this extraordinary, 17 acre microclimate named sunny morning, suggesting their illumination from early morning through late afternoon. Whereas the dominant soil profile of the estate is sand with clay content, the Manachiara vineyard also shows a calcium content and particularly good drainage which, with advanced age of its vines, set it apart from the vineyard parcels.
Tasting Notes: Bright and fruity aromas of strawberries and raspberries follow through to a full body, with firm tannins and a racy, clean finish. Tight still. Give this racy wine time to develop more in the bottle. Best after 2011. 13,800 cases made.
