Naturally, every superstar has their own nickname and it only fits that we call this producer C Rod. The wines are made by Guiller Diez, whose family had been growing grapes in Toro for generations but he is the first formal winemaker in the family. The first vintage was 2003 and his wines are already amongst the best in the region.
The small Estate is 16 hectares in small plots southeast from Toro, particularly the Cascajera Estate. This part of Zamora is one of the very few places in Spain where Phylloxera could never take hold. Carodorum is a blend grapes coming from older vineyards - a minimum age of 40 years old to others that come from ungrafted vines that are more than 100 years old. Guiller continues to take care of the vines in the same way his ancestors did-- without pesticides or fertilizers; all organic matter is re-used; the soil is plowed without machines; by hand in some cases and the grapes are hand-picked. Truly garage wines with less than 1,800 cases produced. This wine is very pretty with a beautiful nose of flowers and dark fruits that continues on the palate and brought together with firm tannins. A perfect complement to a steak, hearty roast or even chili.
Tasting Notes: The 2004 Carodorum Crianza is similarly styled to the Carodorum [It is opaque purple in color with a nose of violets, licorice, blackberry, and chocolate. In the mouth it is rich and layered with enough moderate tannin…] but more massive. It came from 40+-year-old vineyards and spent 14 months in French oak. This huge, hedonistic effort should be cellared for 4-6 years and drunk over the following 10+ years.
