Red Wine Hand-Picked 91 Pts RP r <b>Tasting Notes:</b> Moderately cool soak pre-fermentation, followed by an indigenous yeast fermentation with aerative pump overs, and finish with an extended maceration with heat. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, one third of which are new. The blends are assembled in the summer after the prior year's harvest and bottled the following winter without filtration. These protocols, pioneered by Saracina's winemaking consultant, David Ramey, produce stylistically unique wines with lush fruit and silky, soft tannins. “The 2005 Atrea Old Soul (a blend of 46% Zinfandel, 34% Syrah, 11% Petite Syrah, and 9% Malbec) is sensational. This is a bistro wine on steroids. Deep ruby/plum-colored with sweet kirsch notes intermixed with licorice, pepper, and background toast, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy, and displays vibrant, juicy, even succulent fruit, a nicely layered texture, and a crisp finish with light tannins. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.
