White Wine Hand-Picked 90 Pts RP r Tasting Notes: This terrific portfolio of values is led by Foxglove’s remarkable 2009 Chardonnay, a non-oaked, stainless steel-fermented and aged white that sees no malolactic fermentation. Moreover, there are 30,000 cases of this beauty, a blend of two-thirds Santa Barbara County fruit and the rest from Paso Robles and further north in Monterey. It exhibits crisp honeyed lemon, citrus, poached pear, and honeysuckle notes intermixed with a hint of pineapple. However, it is the zesty acidity, stunning purity, and delightful balance this naked Chardonnay possesses that make it so appealing. Enjoy it over the next year.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 92 Pts RP r The Legend Of Calera Continues
Josh Jensen Does It Again
Calera is one of the most compelling Pinot Noir specialists of not only the New World but of planet Earth- Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

Josh Jensen knows Pinot Noir. After 35 years as a stalwart of Cali’s Central Coast, the San Francisco born Yale and Oxford rower who began his wine journey in France in 1970 working the harvests of elite Burgundy Domaines Romanee-Conti and Dujac, has separate Winemaker of the Year and Winery of the Year accolades to his credit. The success of the wines from his Calera Winery, started in 1975, was the engine behind the 1985 creation of the Mt Harlan AVA with its unique-for-California limestone soils that are a key element in producing the great wines of Burgundy. His single vineyard wines like Selleck, Jensen, Mills and Reed are some of the finest California Pinot Noirs ever made. He also makes one of the all-time great values in Pinot Noir and with his 2010 Calera Pinot Noir 35th Anniversary bottling of this wine. He just hit it out of the park. The wine is a blend of his great single vineyards listed above and the 2010 is gorgeous. Parker rated the wine 90 pts or more (2009 got 92pts) three years running which is huge for a Pinot under thirty. He has not rated 2010 yet but the Wine Spectator absolutely flipped for the wine giving it a monster 93 pts. No Pinot Noir listed even came close to this score and at a price of between $25 and $30. Now on this email and for a very short time I can offer you this insane value for $22.99 while supplies last. The ability to make Pinot Noir of this Caliber at this price is extremely rare. The wine is spectacular from start to finish. Complex, glorious texture, silky and long. Great wood and fruit interplay. This is a WOW from one of the proven and most storied Pinot Noir producers there is.

Thirty-Fifth Anniversary Vintage: A wonderful, full gentle bouquet of red plum, berries, rose petal and mineral accents lively flavors of blackberry, raspberry and sassy sour cherry. This wine offers great depth, spice, a hint of sweet oak and beautiful texture with very fine-grained tannins and a soft, round, easy drinking mouthfeel that lingers on leaving you wanting another taste. Awarded 93 points by the Wine Spectator: A classy art-of-the-blend cuvée that’s very ripe but still complex, relying on rich dark berry, plum, crushed rock and cedar. So young and vibrant at this stage, yet also so deep and tight, that it’s both tempting to drink now but looks like a great cellar choice as well. Drink now through 2021. 93 Pts Wine Spectator The Legend Of Calera Continues
Josh Jensen Does It Again
Calera is one of the most compelling Pinot Noir specialists of not only the New World but of planet Earth- Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

Josh Jensen knows Pinot Noir. Red Wine Hand-Picked 90 Pts RP r 2008 Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir sources vineyards in Monterey, San Luis Opisbo, San Benito and Santa Clara counties, ten different but each recognized as utopia by lovers of the region’s Pinot Noir. Aged ten to eleven months in French oak, fined, bottled unfiltered. “An excellent bargain in Pinot Noir, the 2008 Pinot Noir Central Coast offers a delicious introduction to the Calera style. Fifty percent whole clusters were used, and the wine was aged 11 months in Francois Freres Burgundy barrels, of which 10% were new. Bottled unfiltered, it is a blend of fruit from four separate Central Coast counties, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, San Benito, and Santa Clara. Attractive notes of roasted herbs, sweet and sour cherries, strawberry jam, sassafras, and earth emerge from this medium to full-bodied, supple-textured, seductive red. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.”

White Wine Hand-Picked 91 Pts ST 91 pts Tanzer
I am convinced they are onto something.-Jancis Robinson
Sandhi is one of the most exciting new wineries in central California. Parker’s WA
Superbly Balanced California Chardonnay of The Highest Caliber
This Chardonnay comes from one of the most anticipated to Winery to hit the scene in ages. Everybody on the inside has wanted to taste their wines and now that we have and the pundits have spoken, demand is ferocious. Today we have the 2010 Sandhi Chardonnay Santa Barbara and it is California Chardonnay at its finest, fleshy and ripe, yet matched with complexity and intensity, seldom seen in California Chardonnay at this price. Jancis Robinson, one of my favorite wine writers and pundits who writes fro Decanter loved the wine calling it California with definition and clarity, low in alcohol and not dominated by oak, juicy fruits with great minerality. I have never seen such excitement for a reasonably priced Chardonnay. After tasting the wine, I see why. This has the glorious fruit that we expect from great Cali Chard but is also has Burg like purity and balance. I loved this wine…..

The word Sandhi means 'collaboration' in Sanskrit and is a joint project between three wine VIPs. The first, Charles Banks who with a partner in 2006 purchased Screaming Eagle, the ultimate Cult Napa Cabernet. In 2000 he purchased a cattle ranch in Santa Barbara which became Jonata, Andy Erickson winemaker at Screaming Eagle was hired as consultant and Matt Dees was hired as winemaker. Jonata exploded onto the scene in 2005 scoring 95-97 pts and by 2007 scoring 97-100 points. He is also involved in other Erickson ventures such as Leviathan, a wine we showcased recently as well interests in South Africa, a partner in the great Mulderbosch there. Next is Rajat Parr one of the greatest Sommeliers in the US today, apprenticing under master sommeliers, Larry Stone at Rubicon in San Francisco where he developed an appreciation for great Burgundy. He then moved to Fifth Floor in San Francisco which after two years earned a Grand Award from Wine Spectator. In 2003, Parr was named wine director for the Mina Restaurant Group which own about fifteen of the finest Restaurants in the US. He has become familiar with many of California's greatest wines, he is a master of food and wine, hosting seminars and leading panel discussions at several of the country's most prestigious food and wine gatherings. His new book, Secrets of the Sommeliers, chronicles his experiences. Lastly we have Winemaker Sashi Moorman. Sashi started on the food side working in NYC and DC. In 1996 he started a five-year apprenticeship with Adam Tolmach and The Ojai Vineyard. In 2001 he joined Stolpman Vineyards who make some of the best wine in the cebtral Coast and later adding Evening Land who makes some of the greatest Pinot Noir's in the Santa Rita Hills and Santa Barbara County. The Sandhi Winery is focusing on the finest of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They want there wines to be about finesse, subtle, nuanced and sublime, they have focused on higher elevation vineyards to add minerality and concentration. Elegance and purity is key using a minimalist approach, making wines of spectacular balance expressing the terroir of each vineyard.

Made from grapes grown in the Sanford & Benedict, Bien Nacido and Ritas Crown vineyards): Bright gold. Pear, lemon and toasty lees on the nose, along with notes of iodine and anise. Fleshy, ripe, chewy and deep, with impressive energy to its orchard and citrus fruit flavors. A complex and intense rendition of New World chardonnay, finishing with excellent clarity and mineral-driven persistence. This is a steal. Tanzers Josh Reynolds
The 2010 Sandhi Santa Barbara County Chardonnay is California with definition and clarity; it is 12.5% alcohol and low-oak with that crushed stone and white flowers that is so suggestive of Chablis. The palate is finely threaded with flowers, lemon and orange peel, juicy citrus and stone fruits with great minerality.Jancis Robinson

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.
These 2010s from Greg Brewer encapsulate a desire to move even further along a trajectory of simplicity and minimalism inspired by Japanese culture. Greg Brewer has removed the vineyard designations from his wines and replaced them with Kanji characters that he feels capture the essence of each site. Kanji is a traditional Japanese language based on Chinese characters. Brewer describes the 2010 vintage as relatively cool but with heat spikes towards the end of the season. He harvested early to preserve as much freshness as possible and also bottled on the early side. The wines were all fermented and aged in steel, in very reductive environments, with blocked malos and no batonnage. Not surprisingly, most of the 2010s were a bit reduced when I tasted them in June, but the wines showed quite well with several hours of air. These are striking whites for their transparency and purity, even if at times they are north of 16% in alcohol. 91 Pts Wine Spectator 93pts Robert Parker
91pts Wine Spectator
The 2010 Chardonnay Kazaoto impresses for a textured, voluminous personality that emerges beautifully with time in the glass. Planted at 500 to 1000 feet, Rita’s Crown is planted on diatomaceous soils, which are fossilized seashells and hallmarks of the appellation. This soil creates a mineral thread in the wines while adding more stress to the vines concentrating the fruit flavors. Please click here to see what this soil looks like and a picture of the vineyard. Our sections are south facing receiving ample sun providing slightly riper and juicier fruit. In our opinion, this is the blockbuster white of the spring line-?up with solid structure and persistence.

White Wine Hand-Picked 91 Pts RP r Tasting Notes :The sensational 2008 Chardonnay Central Coast, which is fermented and aged completely in stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation, is a 30,000-cuvee of fabulous Chardonnay. Loads of tropical fruit, honeysuckle, and orange blossom notes fill the olfactory sense, as does the luscious medium-bodied texture on the palate. The wine is buttressed by crisp underlying acidity, and the result is a fresh, naked expression of Chardonnay that is top-flight. Drink it over the next year or so.

These are absolutely spectacular bargains from the very high-quality Varner Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
