White Wine Hand-Picked 90 Pts WE 90 pts Wine Enthusiast
Tasting Notes: The 4 hectares of vineyards dedicated to the production of this wine are located near Galicia throughout the As Neves area of Rias Baixas in northwestern Spain. Planted using the Pergola training system, the vines achieve a density of 2500 vines/hectare in soil that is deep and fairly acidic. Components of decomposed granite allow for excellent drainage, a vital benefit for this area of excessive rainfall. Although not certified organic, Pazos de Lusco does all it can to respect the environment in its viticultural practices. Intense, yet clean fragrances of tropical white fruit make up the bouquet. On the palate, it is refreshing and crisp with grassy notes. A well-balanced wine with a rounded mouthfeel and lingering finish of slight, pleasant bitterness. This wine makes a perfect aperitif, but also is a great accompaniment to sushi and raw shellfish.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 90 Pts RP r Tasting Notes: Remarkably concentrated. The 2006 Umbral de los Tiempos Cabernet Sauvignon is also a glass-staining purple. Aromas of spice box, black currant, blackberry, and violets lead to a dense, sweet, layered Cabernet which should continue to blossom for another 1-2 years. It will offer prime drinking through 2016.

It has a very well balanced palate with powerful citrus fruits laced with lemon curd, orange essence, apricot and brioche that dovetail into a precise finish. This Chenin comes highly recommended, especially for the price. Drink now-2017+
Whilst I have enjoyed more than my fair share of legendary Bordeaux wines, Ken Forrester provides a pertinent reminder that great Cabernet can be made for under ten-dollars. You could count the number of Bordeaux chateaux offering equivalent QPR on one finger. This, and the rest of his portfolio represent everything that can be achieved in South Africa: cleanly made, expressive wines at unbeatable prices interspersed with one of two flagship wines that mean business. If you have never tried South African wine before, then I cannot think of a better place to start than here.

White Wine Hand-Picked 90 Pts RP r Tasting Notes: This terrific portfolio of values is led by Foxglove’s remarkable 2009 Chardonnay, a non-oaked, stainless steel-fermented and aged white that sees no malolactic fermentation. Moreover, there are 30,000 cases of this beauty, a blend of two-thirds Santa Barbara County fruit and the rest from Paso Robles and further north in Monterey. It exhibits crisp honeyed lemon, citrus, poached pear, and honeysuckle notes intermixed with a hint of pineapple. However, it is the zesty acidity, stunning purity, and delightful balance this naked Chardonnay possesses that make it so appealing. Enjoy it over the next year.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 90 Pts RP r 90 pts Parker
Awesome Old Vine Richness From Kingdom Of Garnacha
90 Points Parker Incredible Value In Spain’s Alto Moncayo D.O.
One reason Spain continues to star in the quality/ price category is the development of new wine regions. One “new” (really just lesser known internationally) but with a centuries old wine tradition D.O. is Campo de Borja, situated in the northeast central of Spain. A stunning, hilly landscape, known as the “Kingdom of Garnacha,” it lies between the Sierra de Moncayo mountain, Spain’s highest which gave its name to the celebrated Garnacha Alto Moncayo, and the Ebro River valley. Tasting 2008 Bodegas Aletta Granate from there last evening we thought, here’s a wine that won’t be unknown anymore. 90 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate for this old vine Grenache with a toasty nose of star anise, clove, lavender and black cherry that leads to an intense, round mouthful of blackcurrants and gingerbread palate. Sumptuous and lush with significant structure and tannin. Everything about this wine says quality, serious wine.
As our favorite wine writer Jancis Robinson says “new means as-yet-undiscovered and therefore inexpensive.” She must have been talking about this wine for were this from an “old” established region our price of $14.99 would be triple or higher. Campo de Borja has only seventeen wineries, including the now famed Alto Moncayo Garnacha with its 90+ scores and triple digit price. Bodegas Aletta Granate presents a ground floor opportunity to experience an ethereal wine from this ridiculously under the radar region. But not for long.
Tasting Notes:The 2008 Granate is old vine Garnacha but was aged for 10 months in new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it delivers an alluring nose of smoke, Asian spices, lavender, and black cherry. This leads to a round, opulent, concentrated Garnacha that is all about pleasure. Drink this outstanding value over the next 6 years.

Hand-Picked 92 Pts RP r I have been a long time fan of the dessert elixir of PX Sherry. This one is gorgeous for the price. This is not the sherry you old the old ladies used to sip on. This is a dessert wine like no other, almost black in color and is receiving a bit attention lately, rivalling Banyuls as the perfect match to chocolate desserts and blue cheeses. The Winery was founded in 1832, this wine is aged for fiteen years using the Solera system. I loved this. Red Wine Hand-Picked 90 Pts RP r 90 pts Parker
Tasting Notes: The 2008 Baltos made from 100% Mencia and aged for 6 months in seasoned French and American barriques. It offers up an earthy minerality along with aromas of cherry cola and spicy black fruits. Dense, rich, and layered on the palate, this juicy, pleasure-bent effort has enough stuffing to evolve for 1-2 years but can be approached now. It is an outstanding value.

The vineyards are scattered throughout the Bierzo region in northwestern Spain near Cabanelas, Valtuille, and Almazcara at elevations of 500 meters above sea level. While the soil does vary slightly from one vineyard location to another, it is mostly clayey and calcareous. Being bush vines with an average age of 45 years, the gobelet training method is employed with a planting density of 3000 vines/hectare. Although not certified organic, Dominio de Tares does all it can to respect the environment in its viticultural practices. Enjoy with grilled meats and seasoned chicken dishes, as well as tomato-based pasta dishes.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 92 Pts Wine Spectator 92pts Wine Spectator
Compare To Others At Three Times The Price
SAVE 20% Below Regular Retail
From the superb 2007 vintage in Tuscany. This is a fabulous wine for the money. This wine should be in your cellar. The 2007 Tenuta Monteti Caburnio with a score of 92 pts by the Wine Spectator and a price of $15.99 is an absolute no-brainer. You know which other wines from the same area of Tuscany got 92 pts in the same vintage, we are talking Tignanello, Guado al Tasso, Gaja’s Ca’ Marcanda. These wines sell for $80 to $100 a bottle. Tenuta Monteti is situated in the southern part of Maremma, the coastal part of Tuscany which includes Bolgheri that is famous for great Super Tuscans. The area has proven itself to make great Bordeaux varietals wine, rivaling the likes of Bordeaux and Napa. The world renown Carlo Ferrini is assisting with wine making. He makes some of the greatest red wine in Tuscany today including the likes of Casanova di Neri, Petrolo, La Massa and Oreno. Monteti’s philosophy is to combine the practical blend of tradition with the benefits of the latest technology. The results are spectacular! The wine is made as natural as possible and is a blend of 51% Cabernet; 28% Alicante and 20% Merlot. This wine would be loved by all who like big, rich full bodied red wine. This is truly another spectacular value we seldom see from such a prestigious location.

Tasting Notes: Fresh and focused flavors of black cherry, black currant and herbs that border on jammy, but never cross the line. Supple and smooth, offering ripe tannins and bright acidity for structure, with excellent length. Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante and Merlot. Best from 2012 through 2024. 92 pts Spectator. Parker on 2006, not tasted 2007 yet: The 2006 Caburnio is a big, boisterous wine that captures the essence of this important Tuscan vintage. Blackberries, grilled herbs, spices, menthol and cassis are some of the nuances that come together in the glass with tons of Maremma character. This is a fabulous wine for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 92 Pts RP r Tasting Notes: The 2009 Tres Picos is a worthy successor to the string of splendid vintages which have preceded it. Heady black cherry and blackberry aromas, Asian spices, incense, and mineral notes lead to a dense, layered, rich old-vine Garnacha that over-delivers in a big way. A tasting of every vintage of Tres Picos ever produced (back to 2001) at the Bodega in January 2011 indicates that 8-10 years of pleasurable drinking is a reasonable expectation. However, this is a wine that is ready to drink on release. Bodegas Borsao has long been known for high quality value-priced wines and the current releases are no exception.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 91 Pts Wine Spectator 91 pts Wine Spectator
In A World Of Value 2004 Ondarre Rioja Reserva Is Tops
The cover story of Wine Spectator’s latest issue is “200 Great Values From Around The World.” Inside, the one country that has its own Tasting Report feature is Spain, the global leader in extremely high quality wine at great value. Out of the 675 Spanish wines Spectator reviewed in the Report, one stands out as the top value for outstanding quality: 2004 Bodegas Ondarre Rioja Reserva. 91 points Wine Spectator for this deep garnet Rioja with black cherry, licorice, smoke tobacco and tar notes that is into its maturity but has easily another five years to peak drinking. The greatness of the excellent vintage yields fruit that is perfect for the 3-year ageing of Rioja Reservas. The wine is sinfully delicious right now. What is striking about Spectator’s placing the ’04 Ondarre Rioja Reserva atop its list is that the magazine seems to have particularly rigorous scoring when it comes to Spanish wines. Parker, for instance, scored the ’02 vintage of this wine 92 points. 2004 is universally acclaimed as one of the greatest Rioja vintages, if not the greatest. Which is why, at $18, this is a WS Smart Buy. Which means at our price of $14.99 it’s positively brilliant. This is a red for any wine lover whether your intent is to drink now or cellar. Or better still, both.

Tasting Notes: All of Bodegas Ondarre’s production is solely Reservas. Ageing is in new American- or French-oak casks. Red Wine Hand-Picked 90 Pts RP r Tasting Notes: Chionetti Dolcetto showcases spicy and gripping red fruit with subtle hints of bitter chocolate that exude intense layers of flavor. Nuances of currant, ripe juicy strawberries and bright cherry’s give way to extremely firm tannins that leave a long lingering finish. While most dolcetto is meant to be drunk within 1-2 years, this can easily be enjoyed for another 3-5 years. It’s deliciously versatile for pairing foods including antipasti, and grilled meats. Chionetti has built a reputation on making Dolcetto with extreme structure and depth which is why we find this wine to be so superb. If you love easy drinking red wines with heaps of fruit forward flavor, subtle earthy undertones and a finish that will linger with delicate hints of mint, this is the wine for you.

Parker: The 2009 Dolcetto di Dogliani San Luigi flows onto the palate with layers of gorgeous, ripe fruit. Hand-Picked Dessert 92 Pts RP r Tasting Notes: Thenon-vintage Muscat reveals a dark amber color in addition to gorgeous aromas of molasses, prunes, maple syrup, and toffee.Justifiably renowned for their tremendous dessert wines, Campbell’s four cuvees all performed impressively well, making one wonder if the price difference between the regular and rare offerings is really worth it. Certainly there is a bit more complexity and intensity to the Rare Tokay and Rare Muscat, which emerge from a solera system averaging 60 years of age. In any event, the tasting notes for all four wines are nearly identical to any of the great Australian fortifieds, such as Buller, Chambers Rosewood, etc.
